The Electron Beams Enhancing Analytical Microscopy, otherwise known as EBEAM, is an EU Pathfinder project looking to make new advances in electron microscopy. They are currently testing advances in cathodoluminescence, spectroscopy and ultrafast microscopy, among others. JEOL has released an interesting new instrument, the LazEdge. Based on the IT-700 series schottky SEM, it includes a large laser attachment intended for large area, high speed cross-sectioning applications.
